Heart Care
Trustworthy Heart Care Professionals
Pediatric cardiologists care for children who may have heart problems. Our heart doctors can detect and treat problems before birth, throughout childhood and even into adult life. Our doctors also determine if a heart murmur is real disease or not. They often are called on to diagnose the cause of fainting and palpitations.
Childhood heart disease may be caused by:
- Congenital heart problems/birth defects
- Genetic conditions
- Viruses
- Rhythm disturbances
Your Appointment With The Pediatric Cardiologist
At your first appointment, your doctor will check your child's vital signs. These signs include respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure, height, and weight.
Appointments usually include an electrocardiogram (EKG). EKGs are not painful and do not involve drawing blood or needles. Small sticky electrodes will be placed on your child's skin to pick up the electrical activity of their heart. A cardiac ultrasound, also called an echocardiogram, is often performed. This test is not painful either.
You will receive the results of the EKG and Echo tests on the same day. After those results have been read by the doctor, more tests may be scheduled if needed.
If you think your child needs to see a pediatric cardiologist, find a doctor at Children's Hospital. You do not need a referral to make an appointment.
