Does a Sports Physical Replace an Annual Physical?

Sports Physicals vs Annual PhysicalsAs spring brings new flowers, rain and warmer temperatures to East Tennessee, it’s also time for spring sports like baseball, soccer and basketball to start again. For most youth sports leagues, kids need a sports physical signed by a provider showing they are in good enough health to play the sport.

A sports physical is a great way to test readiness for sports participation, but it’s different than an annual well visit with your pediatrician.

Although a sports physical cannot replace an annual physical, pediatricians can often do both in the same visit! In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends combining your child’s sports physical with their annual physical.

"An annual physical or well check is not just a time for us to check height, weight and give annual immunizations. It gives us the time to take a comprehensive look at your child’s health. At these appointments, all aspects of a child’s health: mental, physical and emotional are considered," said Dr. Karie McLevain-Wells, a board-certified pediatrician at West Knoxville Pediatrics.

"We also look at family history, nutrition and sleep habits and get a chance to have focused time with our patients and their family. Unlike a sick visit, these annual well checks are a chance for us to listen, educate and connect with our patients. We can also provide connections to any specialty services that a child may need."

If your child is a current patient of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital primary care and needs a sports or annual physical, call and let your scheduler know that you would like to book both appointments together.
