Medical/Surgical Services

Children’s Hospital’s services are staffed with licensed physicians, skilled nurses and other staff members with expertise in treating the pediatric patient.
 

 

Emergency Department

The Scott M. Niswonger Pediatric Emergency Department is open for all types of emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

 

Inpatient services

The inpatient general medical units are located on the Second and Third floors of the hospital. More

 

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Each year in the Haslam Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, more than 600 tiny and fragile infants born prematurely or facing life-threatening illnesses receive specialized care, and 97 percent of the babies go home. 

 

Sedation Services

Some patients benefit from sedation during painful or long tests and procedures. A multispecialty team sees each child, including a pediatric sedation physician from Pediatric Analgesia and Sedation Specialists (PASS) and pediatric nurses.

 

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Goody’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provides patients with a high level of monitoring and/or treatment. 

 

Respiratory Care

Respiratory therapists care for patients with lung and/or heart diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, premature lungs and cystic fibrosis. 

 

Surgical Services

Five departments comprise Children's Hospital's Surgical Services: Outpatient Surgery, Surgery (operating rooms), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit ("wake up" or recovery room), Inpatient Surgery and Anesthesia. 

 

Transport service

As a regional referral center for East Tennessee, the hospital offers neonatal and pediatric transport from outlying hospitals in a mobile intensive care unit. 

 

 

 

Diagnostic Services

 

 

Clinical Laboratory

responsible for all diagnostic testing, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, serology and blood bank.

 

Neurology Laboratory

Diagnostic tests for patients dealing with seizures, hearing problems and other conditions involving the brain.

 

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

Performs tests to diagnose lung and heart diseases. Services provided include spirometry testing, metabolic studies, cardiac stress testing, lung volumes and the cystic fibrosis clinic.

 

 

Radiology

The "imaging" center for children, offering x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), echocardiogram and fluoroscopy.

 

Sleep Medicine Center

The Children’s Sleep Medicine Center offers overnight sleep study testing for children who are having problems with sleep, such as sleep terrors and sleepwalking. More

 

 

 

Outpatient Services

 

Home Health Care

Services include registered nursing, respiratory therapy, home infusion, nutritional support, home medical equipment, supplies, social work, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and Spanish interpretation.

 

Outpatient Clinics

Clinics include craniofacial, cystic fibrosis, dermatology, diabetes, gynecology, Healthy Ways (weight management and healthy lifestyles), hematology/oncology, high risk, infectious diseases, metabolic diseases, multispeciality, rheumatology, special attention and spasticity.

 

Rehabilitation Center

Outpatient physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, nutrition, psychology, summer day camp, transportation, parent training, outpatient clinics at Children's Hospital, high-risk follow-up, seating clinics and Spanish interpretation. The center is a United Way agency.

 

 

 

Additional Services/Programs

 

Child Life

Child Life specialists help children cope with fears and stress related to hospitalization, medical procedures, illness and pain through education, medical play and activities. Child Life staff are available from early morning until late evening in departments throughout the hospital.

 

Food and Nutrition Services

Meal services for inpatients; a cafeteria; and vending. Registered dietitians provide clinical nutrition services, and medical nutrition therapy is available (nutrition assessment, feeding recommendations, intake evaluation and nutrition counseling). More

 

 

Healthy Kids Program

Classes, literature, a quarterly newsletter and other opportunities for learning how to improve the health and well-being of children. More

 

HOPP

Hematology/Oncology Patients and Parents, an official support group of Children's Hospital that provides support for families dealing with a child with cancer.


 

Interpretation Services

Spanish interpretation and translation; sign language interpretation; and telephone interpretation in more than 200 languages. More

 

Obesity Coalition

Knoxville Area Coalition on Childhood Obesity, headquartered at Children’s Hospital, works to improve the health of children through a community-wide coalition focusing on reducing the incidence of childhood obesity.

 

Pastoral Care

Chaplains are available 24 hours a day to provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff and to consult on ethical issues.

 

Safe Kids of the Greater Knox Area

Children's Hospital is the lead organization for the local Safe Kids coalition is to reduce unintentional injuries in children up to age 14 in the East Tennessee region. More

 

Social Work

Social workers help patients and families deal with stresses resulting from illness, injury or the hospitalization itself. Clinical social work services include supportive counseling, psychotherapeutic education, case management, assistance with school issues and discharge planning. Social workers are available seven days a week.
